摘要
'词无定译'在实践中已是译界的共识,但似乎很少有人涉足其理论依据。而英国著名语言学家杰弗里·利奇的词义划分无疑是有启发的,使以语义学理论为视点考察英语词义的各种类型成为可能,并藉此探讨在英汉翻译中'词无定译'原则的可能性和必然性,以求给'词无定译'提供一个理论依据。
'No definite translation of a word'is a shared view by translators in practice,but it seems that so far few people have devoted themselves to the study of its theoretical basis.This paper, by investigating the types of word meaning from the perspective of semantic theory,aims to discuss the possibility and necessity of the English-Chinese translation principle 'no definite translation of a word' so as to provide its theoretical foundation.Based on the seven types of word meaning classified by Geoffrey Leech,a famous English linguist,the paper presents its view that four more types of word meaning need to be taken into account in translating from English into Chinese.
