Emerson published Nature in 1836. Thoreau published Walden in 1846, in which he detailed the precious experiences of living alone in nature for twentysix months. Emerson and Thoreau not only in their own century made American life more humanistic, closer to nature, and less rigid religiously, but they continued to exert tremendous influences on contemporary political and ecological activities in the twentieth century.
