With the end of Suhartos regime, the lift of the ban on party and democratic demand of Indonesian ethnic groups, ethnic Chinese in Indonesia obtained the right to organize political parties and various mass organizations mushroomed during the Indonesian national democracy movement at the end of the 20th century. Our field research shows that some characteristics and tendencies of the new mass organizations were different from the old ones. After a comparative study of the two, this article concludes that this is an inevitable outcome of the situation. The ethnic Chinese have adapted to and made the best of the circumstances in Indonesia and the new organizations will play an important role in the rebuilding of both Indonesian nation and Chinese society there.
