Objective:To investigate the effects of swimming exercises on nitric oxide(NO) and mean pulmonary artery psessuse(mPAP) in rats chronically exposed to hypoxia hypercapnia. Methods:Thirty one Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups, normal control group and chronic hypoxia hypercapnia one. Rats were exposed to hypoxia hypercapnia for four weeks ,the latter group was subdivided into two:hypoxia hypercapnia control(HH) group and swimming exercises(SE) group. Contents of nitrate/nitrite,a stable metabolic product of NO in plasma, pulmonary and right ventricular homogenates were measured using colorimetric analysis. L citrulline was determined by liquid scintillometer, and the activities of NO synthase(iNOS,tNOS,cNOS) were counted. Results:The NO 2 -/NO 3 - contents and cNOS activities in plasma, pulmonary and right ventricular homogenate of SE group were markedly higher than those of HH group. Moreover,mPAP of SE group was obviously lower than that of HH group. Conclusion:Swimming exercises could increase NO production and lower mPAP of the rats chroniclly exposed to hypoxia hypercapnia.
