This paper explores the methods of Japanese fieldwork on Chinese architecture in the Meiji era.The authors introduce more than ten field investigations carried out by Chuta Ito,Tadashi Sekino,Shintarou Ohe,and Yasushi Tsukamoto between 1890 s and 1910 s in order to expose almost a-century-old actual measurement and documentation data that has not previously been published. The authors then further analyze the different objects of investigation and the methods used by each team. Finally, the 1905 Manchurian survey by Chuta Ito is discussed in greater detail, which stands out because of its expanded scope of investigation going beyond traditional subject matters like imperial palaces, tombs, and temples. The new focus on dwellings, theaters, and shops demonstrates the different goal of the 1905 survey i.e.to increase understanding and awareness for Manchurian culture rather than to explore the roots of Japanese architectural history.
