Devonian bivalves are well-developed, highly diversified, and widely distributed both in platform and basinal depositional environments in China. This paper gives a brief description of the Chinese Devonian faunas, Devonian bivalve assemblages, with a discussion on bivalve biogeograptiy, Devonian marine bivalve communities and life-habits of various species in China. ABUNDANCE, DISTRIBUTION AND DIVERSITY OF DEVONIAN BIVALVES OF CHINA Over the last decade, a great deal of information about Devonian bivalves has been gathered throughout China. Up to now, marine bivalves have been found from 122 localities including 349 species placed in 113 genera and 39 families (Fig. 1). Geographically, Devonian bivalve faunas are present in most depositional regions of China, such as Guangxi, Hunan, East Yunnan and the Longmenshan district of northern Sichuan, where Devonian bivalves are most aboundant and best known. In addition, fairly diverse faunas have been reported from the Junggar area of Xinjiang, Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia in West and Northeast China. Stratigraphically, in China the Lower and Middle Devonian strata contain well-developed bivalve faunas which were flourishing during late Early Emsian and Givetian times; however, they became sharply declined during the Late Devonian (Fig. 2). Altogether six subclasses of Bivalvia (Newell, 1969) are represented in the Devonian of China. Among them, Palaeotaxodonta account for 15.9% of the genera (including 3 genera of Antactinodion tidae, which are uncertain in classification position); Praecaldioida 5.4%; Pteriomorphia 38% (Pterineidae 11.5%, Ambonychiidae 8.9%); Palaeoheterodonta 17.7%; Heterodonta 8.8%; and Anomalodesmata 14.2%. These faunas are characterized by: (a) well-developed and highly diversified bivalves, with Pterineidae and Ambonychiidae as the especially flourishing taxa; (b) times of high endemism, with the number of endemic genera sharply decreasing in Emsian-Frasian (from 13, 7, 4, to 1 only), but a cosmopolitan fauna came into existence in the Upper
