The occurrence of ultramicro gold in certain carlin-type gold ore has been studied with EPMA, SEM/EDX,
and TEM/EDX in this paper. The features of these analytical techniques and some measures taken to analyses the
gold ore are discussed. Application of these combined techniques to study on gold occurrence successfully shows thatthe so-called 'invisible' gold is composed of a series ultramicro gold particles (about 500nm to a few/~m size) encap-sulated commonly in pyrite, arsenic pyrite and clay minerals ete. A 500nm in size ultramicro gold particle has beenobserved for the first time, and this provides the key knowledge for evaluating the gold occurrence.
