摘要
It's not uncommon to see that ellipsis exists widely in daily communication. This document mainly discuss over ellipsis from its definition, essence, categories, functions, contrastive study on ellipsis between English and Chinese, and its usage in literary works. By summary of these aspects of ellipsis we may realize that ellipsis does not only serves in oral forms but in written forms, which demonstrates its characteristics in both grammatical and pragmatic usage.
