Both The Book of Songs and The Verse of Chu are important works of poetry of the pre-Qin period. One is realistic and the other is romantic, having important far-reaching influence on poems of later periods and even on the Chinese classical literature as a whole. Originating from the same Chinese culture, they have many aspects in common, but because of the differences in times and places of their creation and the differences in social positions and experience between different authors, there exist in them great differences with regard to the spirit of creation, ideological content, language forms, traditional concept of morality, artistic styles. It is not of insignificance to make analyses and comparisons of their similarities and differences for a better understanding of the natures and features of the two works.
