1928年夏的福建之行是徐悲鸿艺术生涯中虽短暂却关键的一段历程,他不但在此完成了其早期代表作《蔡公时被难图》,而且还积极参与当地的美术展览,结交诸多闽籍艺术家。《蔡公时被难图》尽管早已毁于战火,但借助素描稿、旧影像和当事人回忆,我们仍能还原作品内容之大概。《福建全省美术展览会记》一文不但留下珍贵的展会信息,而且以精到的点评呈现了福建彼时方兴未艾的艺术生态。新见《福州郊景》一作,表明画家在体验与记录之余,还尝试描绘民生百态以传达现实主义理念。
Xu Beihong's summer trip to Fujian,in 1928,constitutes a brief yet pivotal period in his artistic career.During his trip,Xu Beihong not only completed his early representative work,Cai Gongshi's Ordeal,but also actively engaged in local art exhibitions and established friendships with numerous Fujian artists.Although CaiGongshi'sOrdeal was destroyed during the war,we can still approximately reconstitute the work's content with the help of surviving sketches and drafts,old pictures,and recollections from eyewitnesses.The article A Record of the Fujian Province Art Exhibition not only provides valuable information about the exhibition,but also offers a glimpse—enriched by the author's insightful reviews—into the Fujian artistic ecosystem,which was burgeoning at that time.The newly discovered work,Scenery on the Outskirts of Fuzhou,suggests that Xu Beihong not only experienced and recorded his surroundings but also endeavoured to depict the lives of the common people,thereby expressing his ideal of realism.
