To investigate the visual characteristics and their influencing factors of drivers in interchange merging areas, experiments on a real vehicle driving were conducted with 47 participants. The visual window areas of drivers passing through interchange merg⁃ing areas were identified using the k-means dynamic clustering algorithm.Indicators such as fixation time, saccade amplitude, and fixation target ratio were chosen to evaluate drivers’visual characteristics. The impact of the number of lanes on ramps and the form of acceleration lanes on these characteristics were analyzed. The results show that drivers’fixation windows are primarily concen⁃trated in six areas.During the acceleration lane segment, drivers have the highest need to focus on the near part of the road ahead. An increased focus on vehicles to the left exists if the acceleration lane length is insufficient, which results in a wider horizontal sac⁃cade amplitude. On direct acceleration lanes, drivers show a higher need to focus on the road ahead and vehicle targets.Conversely,on parallel acceleration lanes, drivers paid more attention to the left side of the road and information such as guardrails and traffic signs.
