The level of physical fitness among adolescents is showing a declining trend, which hinders their overall development. This study examines the influence of peer support in physical education classes on the engagement of junior high school students, taking into account the mediating roles of self-esteem and exercise self-efficacy from the perspective of positive psychology.A total of 539 junior high school students were measured using the Peer Support Scale,Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale,Self-Esteem Scale, and UWES-S Engagement Scale.Correlation analysis and structural equation modeling were conducted to analyze the variables. The results of the correlation analysis indicated significant positive correlations among peer support,self-esteem,exercise self-efficacy,and engagement in physical education. The structural equation modeling results revealed that peer support directly predicted engagement in physical education with a direct effect of 0.163.Self-esteem mediated the relationship between peer support and engagement with an indirect effect of 0.073.Exercise self-efficacy also mediated the relationship between peer support and engagement with an indirect effect of 0.236.Furthermore,self-esteem and exercise self-efficacy acted as sequential mediators in the relationship between peer support and engagement with a serial indirect effect of 0.042.
