In Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita, the Devil who haunts the Muscovites forms a potential dialogue with the Devil who bewitches the knight in Don Quixote. The hypothetical presence of the Devil subverts the relationship between reality and fiction, truth and fantasy, and thwarts both the Muscovites'and Don Quixote's attempts to direct social practice with a single narrative. The aesthetic unity of the two novels lies in the fact that the artists in the novels are united by their function producing reality, and the Devil's role is to expose the potential crisis of this creative concept. For the true artist, art and its value lie in breaking down the artifice of mundane life and confronting the true state of real life.By reversing the epistemological and ontological categories of fiction and reality,Bulgakov shows the way to the truth of art.
