A lacquer ear cup with the inscription“Ju shi”unearthed from a Han tomb at Yinqueshan,Linyi, proves that the institution of the Ju market existed in Shandong during the Western Han period. However, its geographic location, institutional setup, functions, and duration were not clear. In recent years, ceramic inscriptions have been unearthed in the urban area of Ju County, and four sites of large-scale workshops have been excavated, which have promoted further research on“Ju shi”.It is found that“Ju shi”was located in the southern part of Ju County, and lasted from the early Warring States period to the middle and late Western Han period, with large-scale artisanal workshops. At least five types of handicrafts were conducted then, namely pottery, lacquerware, boneware, metallurgical casting, and coin minting. The discovery of the“Ju shi”site directly proves that the official market from the Warring States to the Western Han not only had the function of trading goods, but was also a place for handicraft production with scaled, specialized, and industrialized characteristics.
