The further understanding of“Shi Tao”by Chinese and Japanese painting circles in the late 1920s gave Shi Tao a revolutionary significance similar to that of modernism in the west. The emergence of such a trend was related to the specific situation back then.Besides, close exchanges and interactions between Chinese and Japanese painters were also important for new value judgments.Hashimoto Kansetsu's Shi Tao was the first complete, dedicated Shi Tao-themed monograph.Based on exchanges between Hashimoto Kansetsu and painting circles in Shanghai on calligraphy and painting, this article examines how painting circles in China and Japan reexamined and thought about the value of literati paintings with new artistic concepts after the introduction of western modernism and gave Shi Tao a modern significance.
