摘要
近年来流行一种说法,“大运河”之名源于1958年淮阴生产的“大运河”牌香烟。这是没有根据的,大运河名称由来已久,多指元代以来形成的京杭大运河。最早称呼“大运河”的是欧美人,几百年来西方人用伟大、雄伟壮丽称呼长城和大运河。我国多称“运河”,晚清民国也开始称呼“大运河”,同时继续称“运河”,也偶尔称“中国大运河”。2013年,国家文物局将“中国大运河”作为遗产名称写入申遗文本,赋予其新的含义。万里长城或长城是中国古代文献的名称,西方话语强调了伟大防御功能,翻译则入乡随俗,沿用了中国传统的名称,体现其线形长度特征。运河是中国古代文献通称,受西方影响,近代以后“大运河”名称渐为中国学术界和社会接受并采用,现在已经成为最常用的名称。直译“大运河”凸显了大运河的博大精深:国家工程、庞大的水运体系和举世无双的体量。
In recent years,a popular saying goes that the name of the Grand Canal comes from the"Grand Canal"brand cigarettes produced in Huaiyin in 1958.This is groundless.The name of the Grand Canal has a long history.The Grand Canal mostly refers to the Beijing Hangzhou Canal built since the Yuan Dynasty.For hundreds of years,Westerners have described the Great Wall and the Grand Canal as being"great and magnificent".In the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China,the name"Grand Canal"began to be used as well as the"canal",which was also known as"the Grand Canal of China".In 2013,the State Administration of Cultural Heritage included the"Grand Canal of China"in the world heritage application text,giving it a new meaning.The Great Wall is the name used in ancient Chinese literature.Western discourse emphasizes its defense function,while the translation follows the Chinese,using the traditional name to reflect its linear length.The canal is the general name in ancient Chinese literature.The literal translation of the"Grand Canal"highlights the breadth and depth of the canal,national engineering,the huge water transportation system and its unparalleled volume in the world.In modern times,the name of"Grand Canal"has gradually been accepted and adopted by Chinese academia and society.Now it is the most commonly used name.
