Evolutionary anthropology is crucial for the imagination of primitive societies in the British literary works at the end of 19th century.British writer H.R.Haggard intertwines anthropological theory, and ethnography into the genre of romance. He appropriates and transforms African occultism from the frontier of the Empire to explore the blurring boundary between science and belief, rationalism and occultism in the Victorian Occult Revival.Enlightened by comparative methodology,Africa is regarded by him as the early stage of European cultural development, through which he criticized the blind optimism in“unveiling nature”and demonstrated the importance of a spiritual belief in understanding the world.“Mystical Africa”,an essentially temporal concept for Haggard, represents his active endeavor to critique the“civilized society”and call forth its introspection.
