As part of British cultural critique,Virginia Woolf infused her concern about taste into her writings. The modernization in the 20th century sharply induced people's hollowness of feelings, which was described by Woolf's fellow writer T.S.Eliot as“dissociation of sensibility”in literary taste causing insipidity at that time.Woolf no doubt tried to find ways for the fusion of feelings so as to eliminate the taste crisis. As one of the origins of human feelings,Oriental civilization corresponded to Woolf's need for inspiration from which she might draw to offer her own critique of the degradation of taste.Through the turn of taste from sight to gustation, from dissociation to fusion and from“idea”to"xiang"in Orlando,Woolf revealed the internal factors lying behind the Oriental turn of taste.
