Objective:To explore the effect of group threat on extreme pro-group behavior in the COVID-19 epidemic. Methods:Participants were 1465 college students. We adopted the group threat scale, collective angst scale, legitimacy of the authority scale, and extreme pro-group behavior scale to investigate them.Results:(1)Group threat caused by the COVID-19 epidemic was significantly positively correlated with extreme pro-group behavior;(2)Collective angst mediated the relationship between group threat and extreme pro-group behavior;(3)The latter half mediating effect was moderated by legitimacy of the government authority,in that the mediating effect of collective angst between group threat and extreme progroup behavior was significant when individuals perceived higher legitimacy of government authority and insignificant when individuals perceived lower legitimacy of government authority. Conclusion:Collective angst mediates the relationship between group threat caused by the COVID-19 epidemic and extreme pro-group behavior, and the relationship between collective angst and extreme pro-group behavior is moderated by legitimacy of the government authority.
