The“new England”novels, which include Ethan Frome and Summer, are characterized with the rural areas in new England as narrative background. They focus on the mutual relation between women and nature in patriarchal culture as well as alien women’s pursuit for their self-identity.Mattie in Ethan Frome and Charity in Summer are both naturalized feminine characters.Their similarity with nature makes them become the prey and remolded objects in patriarchal culture. Both novels reveal the male strong desire for control. In addition, they also reveal Wharton’s expectation for women’s dominant role in marriage life and family.Wharton’s“new England”novels reflect clearly such dual relations as male/female,nature/city,white man/ethnic group in patriarchal culture, thus manifesting a clear tendency towards ecofeminist writing.
