Since Xiao Wu was shown at the Berlin Film Festival, the British film critics have paid more and more attention to Jia Zhangke and his films for two decades, making him the representative of post-"fifth generation directors"in the West. How to explain this phenomenon?Through a comprehensive analysis of Jia's film reviews and related information published in the British film magazine Sight&Sound, this paper argues that the magazine's continued interest in Jia Zhangke is mainly based on three aspects, which cover the contemporary Chinese context presented by his films, his creative technique of mixing reality and fiction, and his reflections on the global capitalist landscape. The magazine's criticism of Jia's films more typically reflects and influences the English-speaking world's cognition of contemporary Chinese films.
