Louise Erdrich’s novel The Round House tells of the cultural identity dilemma faced by Native American youth in the process of growing up.Through Joe’s search for his mother’s attacker and his quest for revenge, the work reveals the harm brought to Native American descent by American colonizers. The novel illustrates how self-discovery is found within one’s own cultural group, how self-awareness is achieved through community ceremonies, and how the construction of one’s identity is ultimately achieved through tracing one’s roots and achieving balance. This provides a reflection on the construction of the identity of Native American descent.
