The Long Christmas Dinner is one of the first popular one-act plays by Thornton Wilder. In this play, wilder breaks through the limitations of realism, and successfully integrates the non-realistic and realistic materials for the first time.By means of minimalist stage and time-telescoping,the 90 years historical time is compressed into about 30 minutes of narrative time, and the 90 Christmas dinners of Bayard family is presented as a single scene.Wilder theatriclizes the interaction between instantaneous time and repetitive time, making each specific moment expand to contain the whole history.Through this unique perspective,Wilder not only presents the cyclic structure of history, but also reveals the inheritance and development of history. He emphasizes the eternal value of ritual in historical inheritance and social harmony, aiming to inspire the audience to rethink the value and power of ritual.
