“榆木疙瘩--不开窍”形容人愚笨顽固。这句歇后语涉及许多乡土树种知识和乡土文化。分析认为,作为乡土树种和四旁树,榆树首先谐音“余”字,能够在四旁闲余空地上自然落种成苗而常见;其次谐音“愚”字,一语双关地表示“愚蠢”。榆树遭受蛀干虫害其蛀孔会流溢黏稠树液,用来防御蛀虫危害,是对外界影响的反应,如同人脑开窍一样。榆木疙瘩坚韧顽固,不易劈裂,强调其不开窍则讽喻人愚笨之极。
