The continuous spontaneous construction in the Dinghaiqiao community is a phenomenon arising from the gathering of industrial workers over the past one hundred years. It is the cross-section of the users'everyday spatial practices in a specific era when public resources were chronically insufficient.Tapping into a series of urban studies by the Shanghai-based firm Atelier Z+,this paper starts with the evolution of the Dinghaiqiao community's spatial practices and reveals the complex interconnections between physical space and social space in the spontaneous construction of formal and informal buildings.Seeing the construction as a claim for space right, this paper explores the special value of civilians'spontaneous construction in this certain era, aiming to patch up the understanding of the urban characteristics of Shanghai and the city's sustainable development.
