After half a century of total westernization and De-Ottomanization,Neo-Ottomanism emerged in late 20th century Turkey, with the hope of regaining the glory of the former Ottoman Empire.Orhan Pamuk's My Name Is Red is a manifesto for the author's identity, consequent upon the rise of Neo-Ottomanism in Turkey. The novel traces the origin of"red,"and tells a lot of stories about miniature illustration, which is"memory."Thus,it subtly presents the dialectical unity relationship between"red"and"black,"and intends to arouse the Turks'memory of the brilliant and magnificent"red"and the memory of the glory of the Ottoman Empire, the once"center of the world."Therefore, although only one chapter of the novel is entitled"My Name Is Red,""red"is,in fact,a thematic symbolic visual motif throughout the whole novel, expressing the writer's quest for the origin and glory of the Turkish nation.
