Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is a complex acquired liver injury disease caused by metabolic stress. The occurrence and development of NAFLD are affected by genetics, aging, lifestyle, diet, central obesity-related insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and intestinal flora.Recently, increasing attention has been focused on the role of intestinal flora in NAFLD pathogenesis.Intestinal flora has significant effects on liver functions through multiple physiological processes, including energy metabolism, obesity, type II diabetes, and NAFLD.Animal experiments provide strong evidence that an intestinal flora imbalance plays a major role in the occurrence and development of obesity and NAFLD.Here,we discuss the application of laboratory animals in the study of intestinal flora and NAFLD.
