By deconstructing the logical-rhetorical structure of Thomas Hobbes’ political classic Leviathan, and with the help of the theory of “encoding and decoding” in cultural communication, this paper focuses on the differences and reasons of the three decoding positions: dominant-hegemonic position, negotiated position, oppositional position, in the translations by LI Sifu and by LU Daofu. The paper attempts to provide new translation strategies and paths for the retranslation of classics. The study shows that the LI’s translation is dominated by the dominant-hegemonic decoding, while the LU focuses on both dominant-hegemonic and negotiated decoding. The flexible use of multiple decoding approaches will not only bring new inspirations and experiments to future English translations of classical works, but also provide the target readers with more pleasant versions to choose from.
