This study discusses the Confucian understanding on the role of managers. The research shows that the Confucianists believe that managers should assume the management role of“heaven”,“earth”,“monarch”,“parents”and“teachers”,while the western management scientists regard the role of managers as a series of rational tools. The Confucian understanding of the role of managers is more of value rationality.Such a difference is rooted in different cultural backgrounds and historical problems faced by China and the West. This also determines that the Confucian management role theory with the content of“heaven”,“earth”,“monarch”,“parents”and“teachers”may have more important value today while the western management science is still at the level of unrestricted instrumental rationality and of limited significance for the management practice of domestic organizations at all levels.
