摘要
英语世界对《荀子》译介活动已有一百余年的历史,然而以往的研究多是聚焦于某个时期或某部译本,尚未有研究从翻译史角度对其进行整体关照。本文选取四个具有代表性的译者和其译本,试图连缀成线,勾勒出百年来《荀子》英译史的脉络。本文还以信函访谈的方式,钩沉史料,丰富关于译者的文化身份的信息,旨在探求在北美汉学发展的历程中社会历史因素、学术思潮和译者个人学术旨趣三个因素之间的关联与互动。
The English translation of Xunzi can be traced back to 100 years ago. However, the past researches mostly focused on some specific period or one translation, and the overall study on the history of Xunzi’s translation has not appeared yet. Based on the study of four representative translators and their works, the historical framework of Xunzi’s 100 years’ translation has been outlined. Additionally, through the writer’s correspondence interview to some translators and witnesses, the author has collected more information on translators’ cultural identities, with an aim to explore the interactions between the social, historical factors, academic trends and translator’s academic interest in the course of development in sinology.
