Entering the stage of a universal access to higher education after 1991,Japan’s higher education witnessed changes and reforms in its undergraduate education. And the Japanese case to some extent validates some of the ideas of the American educational sociologist Martin Trow’s theory of mass higher education. In addition, the changes that occurred in Japanese undergraduate education during the stage also have much in common with American undergraduate education, which has long since entered the similar stage,in terms of the introduction of interdisciplinary and integrative learning content, especially in the first-year university education. However,Japan’s unique educational tradition and other domestic factors have also led to many problems in Japanese undergraduate education.
