摘要
在加拿大当代作家扬·马特尔的小说《标本师的魔幻剧本》中,“沉默”构成了一项突出的艺术特征。小说以大量人物对话聚焦大屠杀难以言表之痛,并探讨这一历史事件在当下的言说问题。这些对话中,沉默与言语交织而生,具有多重形式和深刻内涵。小说中的沉默不仅直接指向大屠杀所面临的言说困境,也是不同叙事层、不同角色有关这一“不可言说之事”重要的言说方式之一。同时,作为小说中一种典型的文学表达,沉默参与了小说主题的建构,即参与了马特尔以文学想象书写大屠杀暴行、打破艺术虚构在大屠杀写作中失声传统的尝试。沉默的不确定、对话性和个体聚焦等特质使其承载了丰富想象空间和情感可能,折射出作家用文学想象抵达“情感和心理层面的真切”这一独特的当代大屠杀文学创作观。
The artistic use of the trope of“silence”forms a distinguished feature in contemporary Canadian writer Yann Martel’s fiction Beatrice and Virgil. The book employs massive dialogues to focalize the inexpressible horror of the Holocaust and its representation in post-Auschwitz context, within which silence, an undertone permeating words and discourses, embraces both various forms and rich connotations. In the novel,silence not only corresponds to possible articulating plights of the Holocaust, but also forms a shared way of utterance for all characters while encountering the ineffability of the very event. Meanwhile, silence, as a literary trope, contributes to the thematic construction of the novel, playing a significant part in Martel’s attempt to adopt literary imagination in Holocaust writing, and to break the long-existing silence of Holocaust fictions. Featuring uncertainty, dialogic nature and individualized perspectives, silence in Beatrice and Virgil opens to various imaginary and emotional possibilities, which reveals the author’s unique view on contemporary Holocaust writing, namely, to convey what he stresses as“psychological and emotional truths”through literary imagination.
