The Remains of the Day is a model of modernist novels with time as the narrative clue.This novel is narrated by the reminiscence of the butler,Stevens.Through the selectivity and repetition of the reminiscence,this novel focuses on depicting the psychological process of self-cognition of an old British butler.The form and theme of this novel are endowed with special aesthetic implication by the way of its special form and profound connotation.Through the different characters’conflict over time concept,the different spiritual and emotional worlds of different characters are reflected,allowing readers to feel the rich ideological connotations and the beauty of art forms in the changing time and space.Stevens’s six-day travel as a narrative form and hiding away the fifth-day journey arouse readers’thinking,making readers feel the beauty of imperfection,revealed by the blankness of time;the narrative rhythm is generated by the use of fragmented language,enabling readers to feel its poetic beauty.
