摘要
《元西域人华化考》一书自1923年刊布前四卷,1935年合集正式出版木刻本后,东亚学界对它的资料价值和科学考证方法一致给予高度的肯定。1966年由钱星海、傅路德教授翻译注释的英译补注本出版,欧美学界以牟复礼、拉铁摩尔等为代表的学者们在肯定陈垣原稿的资料价值和傅路德教授补注之功的同时,对此书所呈现出的陈垣本人的历史思维、宗教概念、学术研究范式等都进行了较为负面的评价。这些批评在今天看来,有些是英译补注本的中英语言翻译理解的问题,有些不免是对陈垣论述的苛责。但更值得注意的是,欧美学者在评介此书时所提出的现代学术规范、史学理论与历史理解等问题,对于当今的史学研究,仍不失启发意义。
After the first four volumes of Yuan Xiyuren Huahua Kao by Chen Yuan were published in 1923 and the collection of these volumes was officially published in woodcut in 1935,academic circles in East Asian strongly affirmed the informative value and the scientific textual research methods of these works.In 1966,Professor L.Carrington Goodrich and his collaborator,Ch’ien Hsing-hai,published an annotated English supplement.Scholars in European and American academic circles,such as Frederick W.Mote and Owen Lattimore,while affirming the informative value of Chen Yuan’s original manuscript,criticized his thinking about history,his concept of religion,and his paradigm for academic research.Some of the negative comments were due to scholars’misunderstandings regarding Chinese and English culture,but some negative comments were directed at Ch’en Yuan himself.However,what is more noteworthy is that the modern academic norms,historical theories and cultural understandings put forward by European and American scholars when reviewing this book are still of enlightening significance to contemporary historical research.
