With the background of partition of India and Pakistan,What the Body Remembers,a novel by Indian American novelist Shauna Singh Baldwin, addresses the violence forced on women's body by religion, race and culture from female perspectives. The death of women in the novel is not only the natural decay of the body, but also the oppression, punishment, and deprivation of women in the network of gender, customs and nationality. The author depicts the fate of women in the context of colonialism and national independence, shows how the female body becomes the domain of desire and power, and reveals what had been neglected by nationalist historical works from the female perspective.
