摘要
“中华国际工程协会”是中国近代史上成立时间最早、持续时间最长的综合性工程师团体。其主要由玛礼孙提议成立,章程和规定、组织和运营均仿照英国民用工程师协会并根据上海的情况适时调整。该团体经历了“上海工程师和建筑师协会”(1901—1912)、“上海工程协会”(1912—1913)和“中华国际工程协会”(1913—1951)三个阶段。历任会长和多数会员均为英国人,主要任职于租界工部局工程、建筑部门和外资工程公司以及自办工程事务所。协会历年会员数量最多曾达到456人;会员主要分布在上海,在其他主要通商口岸城市也有少量分布;会员的专业背景涉及工程领域内的各个分支,尤以土木、机械和电力数量为多。作为以英国为首的来华西方工程职业群体移植到中国的产物,其又具有鲜明的上海地域特色。
The Engineering Society of China is a comprehensive group of foreign engineers with the earliest establishment and longest duration in modern Chinese history.Its constitution,regulations,organization,and operation were modeled after the Institute of Civil Engineers in Britain,and the group has been adjusted according to the situation in Shanghai.The establishment has experienced three stages:the Shanghai Society of Engineers and Architects(1901—1912),the Engineering Society of Shanghai(1912—1913),and the Engineering Society of China(1913—1951).Past presidents and most of their members were British.They were mainly from the engineering and construction departments of the foreign settlements in Shanghai,foreign-funded engineering companies,and other engineering offices.The largest number of members was 456.Its members have been mainly distributed in Shanghai and a small number in other major port cities.Its members’professional backgrounds cover all branches of the engineering field,especially civil engineering,mechanical engineering,and electrical engineering.As a product of the transplantation of Western engineering professional groups to China led by Britain,the Engineering Society of China also exhibits distinct regional characteristics of Shanghai.
