During the Ming and Qing dynasties, both Joseon and Annam were tributary states of China. Although their envoys had some literary exchanges in Beijing, the understanding between these two states was still limited. In the 17^(th) century, two Joseon men, named Zo Wan Byeok and Kim Dae Hwang, arrived in Annam by chance. They presented an accurate view of Annam when they returned to Joseon, which aroused great interest among its literati. The thriving maritime trade enabled Joseon people to have a better knowledge of Annam. Since the Joseon Court was not interested in maritime trade and it stuck to the tributary order, the door for direct communication with Annam, which was opened by Kim Dae Hwang, was soon closed, and everything returned to the original state.
