In his interview on 9 November 2019,Professor Pierre Serna reviews the development of French animal history, also the theories and research methods in this field.First,by comparing with the counterpart of the English-speaking world,he points out that the study of animal history in France, despite its late commencement, has its own characteristics. He then combines animal history with eighteenth-century studies, especially the history of the French Revolution, explaining his approach to political history,as well as his methodology through two concepts,‘image’and‘reproduction’.Finally,he reviews such theoretical frontiers as the‘natural contract’and points out that human obligations are the starting point for today’s approach to the relationship between animals and humans.
