Objective To investigate the effect of levetiracetam and sodium valproate in the treatment of benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes and its influence on children's cognitive function. Methods A total of 82 children with benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes were divided into two groups according to random number table method, with 41 cases in each group. The control group was treated with sodium valproate and the study group was treated with levetiracetam foR16 weeks. The clinical efficacy, incidence of adverse reactions,Chinese Wechsler intelligence scale for children(C-WISC)score and P300 latency before and after treatment were compared between the two groups. Results There was no significant difference in the total effective rate between the two groups(P>0.05).After treatment, the linguistic IQ,performance IQ and total IQ scores of C-WISC in the study group were significantly higher than those in the control group(P<0.05),P300 latency were shorter than those of control group(P<0.05).The incidence of adverse reactions in the study group was significantly lower than that in the control group(P<0.05).Conclusions Levetiracetam and sodium valproate are effective and equivalent in the treatment of children with benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes, but levetiracetam has better effect and higher safety in improving cognitive function.
