摘要
当代著名美国戏剧家山姆·谢泼德的剧作《真正的西部》以20世纪后期的美国西部为背景,以作为小偷的哥哥李与身为电影创作人的弟弟奥斯丁身份置换的故事为线索,揭穿了长期以来美国的“西部”幻象。身份问题作为主线,贯穿于始终。作家身份使得谢泼德对历史上媒体等建构的西部形象提出质疑。西部形象作为国家身份的象征,某种意义上遮蔽了美国扩展、殖民、杀戮印第安土著人的历史。而文学、影视艺术等媒介则帮助建构了虚假的西部文化身份。该剧通过主要角色的身份置换及舞台表征,旨在揭穿西部幻象,引导人们去体验真实的西部。
Set in the American west in the late 20th century,True West,written by Sam Shepard,takes the two brothers identity exchange as a clue to debunk the long-standing illusion of the American west.The main topic of identity issue runs through the entire story all along.Under the writer s identity,Shepard questioned the constructed western image,which has always been seen as the symbol of the American national identity by the media in American history.In his opinion,the illusioned west obscures the history of expansion,colonization,and massacre of the Indian aboriginals,while literature,movie,television,and other media help to set up the fabricated western cultural identity.Through the identity replacement of the main characters and stage representation,the play actually intends to expose the illusion of the west and lead people to experience the true west.
