Inspired by the"dispute of consciousness"between the humanities and the sciences,David Lodge,a great master of contemporary British literature, creates the novel Think to demonstrate the unique value of the novel on writing consciousness. On one hand,Lodge applies the double first-person narration and free indirect speech in Thinks to restore the complex and hidden individual uniqueness of consciousness. On the other hand,Lodge improves the technique—stream of consciousness to capture the non-linearity of consciousness, with enhancing the readability of Thinks at the same time.In addition,Lodge adopts the meta-fiction by which the Mise-en-abyme structure and intertextual references reproduce the thinking process of literary creation, thus proving the creativity of consciousness.Lodge’s unique writing of consciousness profoundly reveals the severe social conditions in the 1980s and 1990s,such as vulgarization of British academic circles, prevalence of Consumerism and Hedonism,as well as the increasing alienation of interpersonal relationship.Demonstrating Lodge’s profound thinking on the relationship between novels and consciousness,Thinks makes unique contributions to the understanding the essence of consciousness and meanwhile achieves the educational function of Lodge’s literary creation.
