At the end of 18 th century and the beginning of 19 th century, France was experiencing drastic changes in all sectors of society. At that time, French architecture was in a transitional stage from classical to modern. This paper, represented by referring to two revolutionary French architects of this period, Claude-Nicolas Ledoux and Jean Nicolas Louis Durand, compares their design ideas from the perspective of two circular floor plans they designed, and attempts to explain the characteristics and formation of the two design ideas of formal symbol and formal utility, and points out that the transformation from Ledoux to Durand is the transformation of architectural form from the symbol of external authority to the fitness of individual needs, which is also the beginning of modernity.
