Depression is a chronic mental illness characterized by a persistent low mood and anhedonia. The existing drugs have many deficiencies, such as slow onset, low efficiency and large side effects, so it is of great significance to explore the pathogenesis of depression and find new therapeutic targets. There is growing evidence that excitatory glutamate transporter 2(EAAT2) plays a critical role in neurotransmitter transmission and synaptic plasticity in depression. This review will focus on the role of EAAT2 in depression and the current status of research on related drugs, elaborating the significance of EAAT2 in antidepressant drug research.
