In Dunhuang manuscripts,a transliterated personal name"悉■"is often attested but no agreement has been reached upon its source and meaning.Tokio Takata’s recent research claims that"■"should be a transliteration of the"tag"in the Tibetan word"stag".According to him, this character is composed of dai(歹)/duo(多)and shao(勺),and should be pronounced with an initial from the duan(端)group and a final from the duo(铎)group. This article argues against Takata’s viewpoint and suggests that,"■"should be resulted from the transformation of the Tibetan spelling■(tag)into a Chinese character.
