Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman dramatizes a writer’s interrogation and execution through the similarity between his stories and the real maltreatment of children. The stories that constitute the two-layer narration culminate in a series of events, showing the impact of storytelling on reality. This theme is consistent with the literary event’s emphasis on the influence of literature on reality.Based on the concept of literary event, this essay explores the eventness of the play from three aspects, namely the creation of the writer, the becoming of the text and the performance of the reader.Through storytelling,McDonagh criticizes social crimes and authoritarian power, showing an ethical concern for the weak, and leads readers to participate in the literary event and form their own interpretation of the stories.
