元、白在传播效应中看到了自身的价值,有意识利用石刻拓印、木板雕印等各种复制手段,提升传播效应。从九世纪中叶到十世纪末,书籍处于抄印并行阶段,印本生产以官方与寺院为主体,多为实用类或宗教类宣传品,文人别集以抄写为主,全集流传不广,文集的形态也不稳定。白居易在世时,流行于世的多为元和时形成的小集与元白唱和集,五十岁后的作品多不为人知。书籍生产商品化推进了印刷技术普及化,也带来了全集流行的时代,《白氏文集》初刊于宋初,是对多种抄本编辑的结果,固化了白集形态,与抄卷原始形态多有不同。印本降低了文集制作的成本,推动了私人全集的流行,改变了作者的创作观念与阅读者的批评理念。
After the Zhenyuan(贞元) period under the reign of the Emperor Dezong of the Tang Dynasty(唐德宗), the number of readers increased greatly. Yuan Zhen(元稹) and Bai Juyi(白居易)noticed their own value as a result of the propagation effect, and consciously applied various copying techniques like stone rubbing and wood-block printing to enhance the propagation effect of their works. It was not until 300 years after the appearance of printing techniques that printed books started to get popular. From the mid-9 th century to the end of the 10 th century, books were made by both hand-written copying and printed copying. Printed books were mainly produced by the government and temples, with a large proportion of them for daily use or for religious purpose. The literati’s collected works were mainly made by hand-written copying. Their complete works were hardly circulated on a wide scale. And the format of their anthologies were not fixed. When Bai Juyi was alive, only a small collection of his works written in the Yuanhe(元和) period under the reign of the Emperor Xianzong of the Tang Dynasty(唐宪宗), and the Collection of the Serial Versifying Between Yuan Zhen and Bai Juyi(《元白唱和集》) were broadly circulated, while most of the works that he wrote after the age of 50 were unknown. Thanks to the commercialization of books, printing technology got popular and a new era of complete works commenced. Bai Juyi’s Anthology(《白氏文集》) as a complete collection of his works was first published in the early Song Dynasty. It was an outcome of the editing of various hand-written copies, which led to its final fixed format and differentiated it from its original format in many aspects. Printed copying greatly cut down the cost of the production of an anthology, thus promoting the circulation of personal anthologies, and changing the authors’ views of writing and the readers’ views of reception and criticism.
