Following the unequal Treaty of Versailles imposed on China at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919,Chinese readers wrote numerous letters to the editor of the The New York Times to defend Chinese sovereignty over the Shandong Peninsula and debate with westerners who supported the Japanese stance.Presenting concrete evidence and specialized knowledge in an argumentative style, these letters explicated the harm caused by the treaty to China and advocated for Chinese national interests and rights, manifesting the rise of Chinese nationalism in a new era.Despite the failure of Chinese diplomacy at the Paris Peace Conference,Chinese intellectuals’letters enabled China to gain warm support from a wider international community, which might have contributed to a groundswell of international public opinion assisting China to reclaim sovereignty over Shandong at the Washington Conference in 1922.
