摘要
自20世纪60年代以来,亨利·菲尔丁作为英国现实主义小说开山鼻祖的地位饱受争议。众多批评家把菲尔丁背离形式现实主义的原因归咎于其新古典主义思想。然而,新古典主义传统与菲尔丁小说创作的关系并非可以如此简单概括。菲尔丁对新古典主义并非全盘接受,而是有选择地"扬弃"。本文聚焦于菲尔丁中后期的小说创作,探讨其对新古典主义文学传统的颠覆与继承。正是基于对新古典主义可信性原则的坚持,菲尔丁发展出了评价式现实主义。此外,菲尔丁受滑稽讽刺作品影响形成的嘲讽性评论和语气,深刻地影响了维多利亚小说中的反讽修辞,发出了批判现实主义的先声;其对道德化人格名称的改造也预示了后世现实主义小说社会心理描写的新趋向。
Since the 1960 s, Henry Fielding’s position as the inaugurator of the British realistic novels has been challenged. Many critics attribute Fielding’s deviation from formal realism to his preference for neoclassicism. However, the relationship between neoclassical literature and Fielding’s novels cannot be thus simply summarized. Fielding does not accept neoclassicism completely, but "sublates" it. This paper focuses on Fielding’s later novels, aiming at discussing how Fielding subverts and inherits neoclassical literary tradition. It is because of his insistence on neoclassical credibility that Fielding has developed a realism of assessment. In addition, Fielding’s satirical comments and ironical tone, which originate from the Augustan burlesque, have profoundly influenced the later development of the Victorian novel as well as critical realism;his transformation of neoclassical charactonym has also foreshadowed the tendency towards the representation of social psychology in later realistic novels.
