Roland Barthes has many faces in his academic career. In the early middle period,Barthes exerted a lot of efforts in the structural semiotics. While in the late middle period,Barthes paid more attention to the topic of writing, body and desire. As an important text in the middle period of Barthes,Empire of Signs carries Barthes’thinking from Japanese culture. In Barthes’view, the center of Japanese symbols is empty and meaningless, and every symbol needs to be written. In the writing, the dimensions of body emerge. From the reflection of semiotics to the discussion of writing,Empire of Signs can be regarded as the transition and intermediary of Barthes’ideological turn.
