Proxenia was an institution that serves the inter-polis relations in ancient Greece.Greek states issued decrees to honor foreigners as their proxenoi.Among all the Greek states,Delphi, the Panhellenic sanctuary, issued the largest number of decrees to grand positions of extant proxenia. The earliest proxenia decrees of Delphi can be dated to the end of the fifth century BC.,and by the third century BC.,the number of this kind of decrees reached its peak.Nevertheless, although Delphi adopted such a practice, the proxenia appointed by Delphi was a ritual honor with little practical power, which is different from other states.
